Limerick East): The net non capital allocation per head of population in respect of each health board area for the year 1994 is set out in the following table. The figures quoted are in respect of direct expenditure by each health board, the relevant amount spent by public voluntary hospitals and mental handicap agencies and the G.M.S. (Payments) Board on behalf of each board. The figures are based on the 1991 census of population.
I point out that expenditure per head of population is an unweighted average which does not take account of a number of important demographic and geographic factors. The cost of health care in each region is also influenced by other factors such as access to higher specialities, density of population and, in particular, the present stage of development of the services.
