Vol. 457 No. 8

Written Answers. - Teacher Training.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

114 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the amount of money provided from EU Structural Funds for the purpose of providing in-service training for teachers over the period of the national plan; and the plans, if any, which exist in her Department for the use of these funds. [16441/95]

The total amount provided under the national plan for incareer development at first and second level for the period 1994-99 is £36.5 million, at 1995 prices. This provision is co-financed by the European Commission under the Human Resources Operational Programme to the extent of £27.4 million or 75 per cent. The funding provides for in-service training for teachers and also for management training, including parent training. In addition, the running costs of the education centre network are funded under this programme. The main priority areas for in-service training are set out in the White Paper, Charting our Education Future. Broadly, these fall into the areas of facilitating the major curricular changes and reforms and advancing the professional development of teachers, in addition to training for managements and parents.
