Vol. 458 No. 3

Written Answers. - Car Hire.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

42 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some senior citizens visiting Ireland have difficulty in renting self-drive cars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16879/95]

Decisions as to the renting of cars are a matter, of course, for individual car hire firms.

I understand that car hire companies in Ireland operate a restrictive policy towards renting of cars to senior citizens, particularly those aged over 70. The reason appears to be the high cost of obtaining insurance for persons in this age category and applies to all potential renters, both Irish or visiting. Matters relating to insurance services and costs are dealt with by my colleague, the Minister for Enterprise and Employment.
