Vol. 458 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork Road Grant.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

61 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Environment if he will increase the special grant for the Glengarriff-Castletownbere Road, County Cork. [17455/95]

Under the EU co-financed scheme of grants for certain categories of improvement projects on regional and local roads. Cork County Council were paid a grant of £500,000 in 1994 for works to the R572 Castletownbere Road. A further grant allocation of £500,000 for this road has been made in 1995 under the scheme. There are no funds available to me from which an additional grant could be allocated this year.

My Department has already invited proposals from local authorities for consideration for funding under the scheme in 1996 and, in response, Cork County Council have submitted an application for funding at four locations on the R572 Glengarriff-Castletownbere Road at an estimated cost of £650,000. All proposals received are currently being examined with a view to the selection of projects for funding. I will announce grant allocations for selected projects early in 1996.
