Vol. 458 No. 8

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 30 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with them separately and I will call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices.

I request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to debate an urgent matter of public importance: the shooting dead of three people on the streets of Dublin last week and the action the Minister of Justice intends to take to prevent a recurrence of such atrocities.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the removal by Government of most of the board of CIE, when the explanation required by the Act will be given to the Dáil and to inquire into the deplorable, autocratic and vindictive sackings today of Miss Angela Coffey and Miss Kay Mulrooney who like all directors have been above reproach.

The Deputy should have kept to the notice given to the office of the Ceann Comhairle.

A disgraceful decision.

Having considered the matter fully——

What has happened today is unprecedented.

Order, please. Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

On a point of order——

The Deputy will know that the matter will be raised on the Adjournment.

Is it in order for the Taoiseach to stay silent when the unprecedented sacking of two members of the CIE board, neither of whom deserve it, has taken place today. It is vindictive and disgraceful.
