Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rationalisation of Second Level Schools.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

132 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the proposed rationalisation of second-level schools in the town of Ballinasloe, County Galway; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18080/95]

As the Deputy will no doubt be aware, there is a need to improve second-level school facilities in Ballinasloe, County Galway.

Having regard to the need to maximise the educational opportunities available to second-level pupils in the area within the constraints of available capital resources, the rationalisation of second-level school facilities has been under consideration in my Department. However, some opposition has been expressed locally to the proposal to amalgamate the two secondary schools in the town.

I am currently reviewing the centre with a view to drawing up a plan which well best serve the needs of the pupils, having regard to local opinion and the need to be cost effective in the provision of new accommodation.
