Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Street Litter.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

148 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the evidence, if any, there is that the attractiveness of some Irish resorts to tourists is diminished by the amount of litter on streets; and the studies, if any, that have been conducted regarding this problem. [18747/95]

As I pointed out to this House in response to a related question on 14 June, 1995, among the major strengths which characterise Irish tourism is our clean physical environment. I am concerned, therefore, that litter should not be allowed to detract from our visitors' enjoyment and appreciation of our countryside, cities, towns and villages.

In Bord Fáilte's annual survey of visitors' impressions of Ireland, a significant minority comment adversely on litter. While I have said many times that the problem of litter is one that we must all help address, at Government level it is a matter for my colleague the Minister for the Environment, who has already indicated that he intends to develop a sustained and effective anti-litter initiative. I am strongly supportive of the planned initiative and I look forward to a policy statement on the matter by the Minister for the Environment.
