Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion Grants.

Seamus Kirk

Ceist:

182 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for the Marine the amount of grant-aid given, on a county by county basis, within the last two years towards coastal erosion remedial work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18708/95]

The grant aid awarded by the Department of the Marine during 1994 and 1995 is as follows:

County Wexford

£

Rosslare Strand

337,037

Courtown

22,629

Duncannon

56,250

The works at Rosslare Strand form part of the EU sponsored ECOPRO Project (Environmentally Friendly Coastal Protection which has been under way since 1993).

County Kerry

£

Maharees Peninsula

110,000

Waterville

75,000

County Mayo

£

Bertra Beach, Westport

63,000

County Galway

£

Innishboffin Island

75,000

Guteen Beach, Roundstone

56,250

County Meath

£

Laytown Strand

78,750

County Dublin

£

Killiney Beach

105,000

In addition to the above projects approval has been given for a major £2.3 million protection scheme at Bray, Co. Wicklow. Work on site will commence in 1996.
All the works being aided by the Department of the Marine have been identified by the various coastal local authorities as priority works. As the Deputy will be aware, the Department of the Marine sought details of the local authorities priority proposals in order to identify works to be undertaken under the Coastal Protection Measure of the Environmental Services Operational Programme 1994-99. A number of these priority projects have been aided this year and that process will continue each year till the end of the Programme in 1999.
However, I must caution that the total value of the priority works identified by the coastal local authorities exceeds the £5.2 million available under the Programme. Therefore, it will not be possible to undertake works at all the locations identified.
