Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Microwave Aerials Hazard.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

65 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the publicised anxiety of various resident groups who are opposing planning permission for the erection of GMS microwave aerials on the grounds that they pose a potential health hazard; if residents have any reason to fear such installations; the current scientific thinking on the issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18484/95]

, Limerick East): I am aware of concerns expressed regarding possible health hazards from radiation associated with microwave emissions from telecommunications transmitters. Telecommunications companies here are licensed by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications who have advised that companies use low power transmitters and operate within safety limits recommended by the International Radiation Protection Association. Radiation emissions measured here have been well within the recommended limits. Research into electromagnetic radiation is monitored on an on-going basis by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications. My Department maintains liaison with that Department in relation to the health aspects of the matter. The general body of scientific evidence to date has not conclusively established a causal relationship between this form of radiation and ill health. Approval for erection of transmitter masts is the responsibility of the relevant local planning authorities.
