Ceist:119 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice the number of neighbourhood watch schemes which have become defunct in each year since 1990. [18846/95]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 117 and 119 together. I am informed by the Gards authorities that the number of neighbourhood watch schemes in operation in the Dublin metropolitan area is as set out in the following table — the information is supplied on the basis of Garda Districts rather than postal districts:-

There are 1,946 neighbourhood watch schemes. This represents the total number of schemes established since 1985 when the neighbourhood watch scheme-began and, as such, no schemes are regarded as defunct. While particular schemes may become temporarily inactive, every effort is made to restore such schemes to full operation as quickly as possible.
