No figures are available in my Department in relation to the total expenditure in the State on such research. Due to the very low incidence of the disease in Ireland, and as the availability of confirmed cases in Ireland is low by comparison with the UK, comprehensive research has not been pursued in Ireland. The Veterinary Research Laboratory in my Department has carried out collaborative work for a research project in the UK while another project is under way in University College, Dublin.
