Vol. 459 No. 7

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Rechecks.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

37 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she intends to bring forward the results of rechecks of Leaving Certificate examination papers in order that they can be incorporated under the CAO/CES schemes. [17708/95]

In recent years the results of applications for a recheck of leaving certificate exercises have been issued in the first week of October. This date was decided on in 1992 following discussions between my Department and the university authorities.

Some universities are now opening earlier than in 1992. Furthermore, the Central Applications Office is now, with the co-operation of my Department, in a position to issue offers to applicants some days earlier than in previous years. Taking everything into consideration, I have decided that in 1996 the results of rechecks of Leaving Certificate exercises will be issued on 27 September. This decision was communicated to schools by a circular letter issued on 29 November 1995.

I should add that the former issue date of the first week of October was agreed with the university authorities with a view to ensuring that all candidates who qualified for admission to a course as a result of an upgrade would be admitted, in the current year, to the course in question. I have no doubt that the issue date of 27 September in 1996 will facilitate the universities and other third-level institutions in this regard.
