Smith asked the Minister for Education if discussions have been initiated with a view to the establishment of a single representative body for national voluntary youth organisations; if so, the organisations that have been consulted; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Following the publication of the White Paper on Education, my Department sought the views of all relevant organisations on the provisions relating to youth work, including the proposed single representative body for national voluntary youth organisations.
This consultation has been of enormous assistance in the preparation currently under way of the Youth Service Bill, which is anticipated to be published during the first half of next year.
I understand that organisations have been meeting on an informal and ongoing basis to discuss a variety of issues including the establishment of a single representative body.
