There are 17 staff in my ministerial offices, 14 of these are civil servants. These include one programme manager; one private secretary; three executive officers; seven clerical officers and two clerical assistants-typists. These posts are filled on a full-time basis by established civil servants paid in accordance with the appropriate Civil Service pay scales. Three are non-established staff employed on a contract basis: one special adviser; one personal assistant and one personal secretary at an estimated annual cost of £92,709.
These 17 staff have incurred travel and subsistence expenses totalling £5,072 to date in 1995.
In order to support my role as a party leader in Government, a small research unit has been recently established to provide me with advice and analysis on policy proposals which arise on the general Government agenda outside my departmental responsibilities. This unit is staffed by a civil servant at principal officer level, paid in accordance with the appropriate Civil Service pay scale; plus five non-established staff employed on a contract basis: one senior research assistant; one research assistant; two part-time research assistants and one administrative assistant at an estimated annual cost of £91,718. These staff have not incurred any travel or subsistence costs to date.
