Vol. 459 No. 8

Written Answers. - Establishment of Casino.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

64 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Finance the number of proposals that have been conveyed to him regarding the establishment of a casino; and when a decision will be made regarding location, legislation and related matters. [19042/95]

I am aware that a number of promoters have indicated an interest in establishing a casino in Ireland though these proposals would not necessarily have been made directly to me.

No decision has been taken by the Government on the principle of licensing casinos. Legislation would be required.

The Government has approved in principle the development of a national convention centre.

At the request of the Government, my Department is compiling a report, in consultation with the other Government Departments and agencies involved, on the pros and cons of licensing a casino either as a possible source of finance for the convention centre or otherwise on its merits. I expect that this report will be available to me in the fairly near future.
