Vol. 459 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mulcair Flooding Relief Scheme.

Michael Smith

Ceist:

69 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for Finance the current position in relation to the relief of Mulcair flooding scheme on the river. [19088/95]

Over the past few years the Commissioners of Public Works have been engaged in the survey, design and economic and environmental evaluation of various options for the execution of an arterial drainage scheme for the Mulcair catchment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. All prospective costs and benefits have been included in the various analyses undertaken but it has not proved possible to devise an economically acceptable scheme.

The Commissioners of Public Works are engaged in designing flood relief schemes for Cappamore and Newport both of which suffer as a result of flooding of the Mulcair. An environmental impact assessment of the proposed scheme has been commissioned and is due for completion in July next year.

Provided the EIA and cost benefit analysis prove favourable the scheme will then be submitted for approval by the Minister for Finance prior to public exhibition in accordance with the provisions of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 as amended earlier this year.

All going well it is hoped to commence work at the end of next year.
