Vol. 459 No. 8

Written Answers. - Chiropody Service.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

75 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health if he will consider introducing a limited free chiropodist service for old age pensioners without a medical card; and the approximate cost of providing such a service to a limit of two free visits per year. [19079/95]

, Limerick East): The health strategy noted that there are a number of services, including paramedical services, for which no eligibility criteria, or rules governing charges, are set down in legislation. The strategy also stated that because these services have developed in the absence of legislative guidelines there are considerable differences from area to area in relation to the extent to which they are provided and who is entitled to receive them. It said that national guidelines on eligibility, which will be applied in a uniform manner in all areas, will be introduced in respect of services where legislative provisions are absent.

The extent of such services, including chiropody, is being considered and I do not consider it appropriate at this stage to introduce a limited service for any specific group.
Chiropody services are relevant to a number of different client groups, such as the elderly, persons with a mental handicap and persons with a physical disability. As funding is allocated on the basis of the overall programme for each client group it is not possible to identify separately the total expenditure on the chiropody service. Therefore, the data required to estimate the cost of providing the level of service requested is not available.
