Vol. 459 No. 8

Written Answers. - Wildlife Legislation.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

83 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the current status of the promised legislation to update the law and comply with international conventions on wildlife. [19031/95]

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows:—

Convention on Biological Diversity

The Government recently approved proposals to proceed with the ratification of this Convention. A motion will shortly be presented to Dáil Éireann for its approval to the terms of the Convention following which the Convention will be ratified.

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)

This Convention cannot be ratified until amendments to the Wildlife Act, 1976, being prepared in my Department have been enacted. However, the provisions of the Convention have been implemented in member states by EU Regulation 3626/82. This regulation is in the course of amendment by the EU.
