Vol. 460 No. 5

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy McDaid — the proposed closure of the Information Technology Centre, Letterkenny, County Donegal; (2) Deputy Frances Fitzgerald — the findings of a recent television programme on the ill-treatment of children in orphanages in China; (3) Deputy Molloy — the difficulties caused for a person in County Galway who has had to abandon his university studies as a result of an anomaly arising from changes in the higher education grants scheme in 1993; (4) Deputy Crowley — the reason driving testers were not made available to the Mallow test centre for 14 weeks in 1995; the waiting list as a result of this situation; and the reason driving tests are available on demand in Border areas; (5) Deputy Quill — the impact of the proposed nurses strike; and the measures being taken to avert such action; (6) Deputy Shortall — the need for a public awareness campaign on the dangers of ecstasy; (7) Deputy Lawlor — the lack of custodial accommodation for young offenders as evidenced by the recent release of a youth from Oberstown House due to a lack of space; (8) Deputy Séamus Brennan — the need for the publication of the internal consultants' report on An Post in view of the latest dispute at the company.

The matters raised by Deputies Quill, Crowley, McDaid and Lawlor have been selected for discussion.
