Helen Keogh

Ceist:

54 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the number of child care workers who have resigned and have not been replaced since 1985; and the number of child care workers who have gone on career breaks and have not been replaced since 1985. [1655/96]

Child care workers are employed in special education facilities catering for children with certain disabilities. They are also employed in the custodial facilities operated under my Department for children and young persons placed in detention by the courts.

I am pleased to advise the Deputy that any vacancies arising in the child care grade as a result of retirements, resignations or career breaks can be filled where a need for the post in question continues to exist. All child care worker posts vacated in the above circumstances since 1985 have now been filled.
