Vol. 460 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dunmanway (Cork) School Hall.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

58 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to have adequate funding provided to complete a physical education hall attached to the secondary school at Dunmanway, County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1679/96]

The post primary school referred to by the Deputy applied to my Department for grant-aid towards the cost of providing a physical education hall. The school also applied for an extension requiring major capital expenditure, as did the other post primary school in Dunmanway.

The combined enrolment of the two schools is around 670, which is an ideal size for a single school development. In the circumstances, my Department is investigating the possibility of rationalisation in the centre before deciding on the individual building projects, including the provision of grant-aid for physical education facilities at the school in question.

My Department has written to both school managements in the matter seeking their observations regarding rationalisation.
