Ceist:

69 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the number of applications made for political asylum in Ireland in each of the last five years; and the number of applications in each of the last five years that were granted, refused and awaiting decision; and the number of applications awaiting decision for more than one year. Alan Shatter

Ceist:

70 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the number of applicants for political asylum who have been interviewed and in respect of whom the reports of their interviews have yet to be forwarded to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees for assessment; the number of these interviews that were conducted in each of the last five years that have yet to be forwarded; and the reason for the delay in their submission to the UNHCR. [1648/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 69 and 70 together.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the tabular statement below, which sets out for each year the number of applications received and the outcome or present position of these applications:

A total of 101 applicants have been interviewed whose cases have yet to be forwarded to UNHCR. These refer to 1995 applications only as all applications received for previous years have been forwarded to UNHCR. These cases have been held back at the request of the UNHCR so as to enable them to deal with their own backlog.
