Vol. 460 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Masts.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

113 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Health his views on possible health and safety consequences of the erection of telecommunications masts. [1721/96]

(Limerick East): I am aware of concerns expressed regarding possible health hazards from radiation associated with microwave emissions from telecommunications transmitter masts. Telecommunications companies here are licensed by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications which has advised that companies use low power transmitters and operate within safety limits recommended by the International Radiation Protection Association. Radiation emissions measured here have been well within the recommended limits. Research into electro-magnetic radiation is monitored on an ongoing basis by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications. My Department maintains liaison with that Department in relation to the health aspects of the matter. The general body of scientific evidence to date has not conclusively established a casual relationship between this form of radiation and ill health. Approval for erection of transmitter masts is the responsibility of the relevant local planning authorities.
