Vol. 460 No. 7

Written Answers - Bus Transport Competition.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

31 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the plans, if any, he has to introduce bus transport competition to Dublin city and other areas. [2028/96]

The provision of passenger road transport services, other than services provided by Bus Éireann and Bus Átha Cliath, is governed by the Road Transport Act, 1932. There are a number of difficulties associated with the implementation of this legislation and there is a general consensus that it needs to be changed.

Since coming into office, I have initiated a comprehensive review of the legislative framework governing bus transport. I began an extensive round of consultations with the major interests in the sector late last year. It would be inappropriate for me to pre-empt the outcome of this consultation process by speculating on possible proposals which may emerge for the reform of the sector, whether in Dublin or other areas.
