Vol. 460 No. 7

Written Answers - British Telecom Network.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

38 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he is concerned that British Telecom is to establish a new managed network node in Dublin which will cut prices by up to 30 per cent. [19170/95]

BT (World-wide) Limited is licensed in Ireand to provide certain telecommunications services under the Postal and Telecommunications Services Act, 1983 as amended.

I understand the managed network node referred to by the Deputy will permit the connection of customers via lines leased from Telecom Éireann. This is within the terms of the company's licence.

I have no statutory function in relation to telecommunications tariffs other than in the case of Telecom Éireann. I am not in a position to say what effect there will be on the prices of telecommunications services as a result of the introduction of the service but, generally speaking, I would welcome competitive prices wherever possible.
