Vol. 460 No. 7

Written Answers - Bilateral Cargo Agreement.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

105 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he intends to conclude a bilateral agreement with the British Government on air cargo security. [17688/95]

I am aware that there are difficulties in relation to the acceptance at UK airports of Irish originating freight consignments which have been transported by road and sea to airports in the United Kingdom. These have arisen because the UK authorities require that certain security measures must be applied to all such consignments, irrespective of national origin, prior to their onward carriage by air from the UK.

My Department is seeking to identify a solution to these difficulties, in so far as they affect Irish exporters, which will take account of the concerns of all parties. I have no plans at present, however, to conclude an air cargo security agreement with the United Kingdom.
