Vol. 460 No. 8

Written Answers. - Compensation Claims.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

13 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Defence the number of claims lodged in connection with hearing damage; the total amount of compensation claimed; and the total amount of money paid by his Department in respect of this compensation. [1657/96]

The total number of civil legal claims received by my Department in respect of alleged loss of hearing by serving and former members of the Defence Forces is about 2,500. The claims do not specify the amount of compensation being sought.

The amount of compensation including legal costs paid by the Department in respect of loss of hearing claims in each of the past three years is as follows: 1995, £1,362,821; 1994, £666,012; 1993, £251,183.
