Vol. 460 No. 8

Written Answers. - Occupational Injury Cover.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

45 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Marine the steps, if any, which he is taking to ensure that fishermen, who had no State occupational injury cover in 1995, but who had seven times the occupational death rate of farmers in 1995, eight times the occupational death rate of construction workers and 70 times the occupational death rate of those working in manufacturing, will have full occupational injury cover and other social welfare cover for the coming years. [2131/96]

The question of social insurance provision for fishermen is of course the responsibility of my colleague the Minister for Social Welfare. However, I can advise the Deputy that the Department of Social Welfare is currently undertaking a thoroughgoing review of the position of fishermen under the social insurance system. The review is being informed by discussions with my Department and with fishery industry representatives.
