Vol. 460 No. 8

Written Answers. - Conspiracy Conviction.

David Andrews

Ceist:

47 Mr. Andrews asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied), who was convicted of conspiracy for the attempted bombing of Chelsea Barracks 10 years ago, has now produced corroborative evidence of his innocence; the action, if any, he intends taking in the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2235/96]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers. Consular aspects of this case have been raised by the Embassy in London with the Home Office since the person's arrest in December 1985. An Embassy official attended in court at an unsuccessful appeal taken by the person. The Embassy has had further contact with the British Home Office on a consular aspect in the past few days.

I understand that the person's legal advisers are seeking at present to assemble new evidence and that some progress may have been made in this regard. I can assure him that my Department will monitor any further developments in the case closely.
