159 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the definitive dates last month during which McMahon Sheedy Communications undertook a survey for his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3395/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 158 and 159 together.

An invoice is received from the agency at the end of each month in respect of work carried out that month.

Drury Communications were employed as public relations consultants by my Department in the years 1992-94 at a cost of £54,676.50. I would not be privy to details of any survey undertaken by this agency. The hiring of such agencies was not only common practice in this Department but in other Departments as well, as the Deputy will have personal knowledge of from his time as Minister.
In regard to the provincial media, McMahon Sheedy provide a fortnightly column to some 30 papers. This provides important information for farmers and food processors on critical issues affecting their industry.
I understand that a small number of persons were questioned during a brief period in January 1996 in connection with the survey referred to. This survey was the only specific work undertaken at the agency's own initiative. As stated previously, the results of the survey referred to and the questions asked therein are confidential.
McMahon Sheedy Communications have been engaged by my Department as public relations agents to:
—project the policy of this Department, the Ministers attached to it and of the Government on all aspects of agriculture;
—liaise with the Department on matters relating to publicity and layout of departmental publications; and
—attend to other matters relating to good public relations.
The term of the current contract is until I cease to hold office which is the practice for such contacts.
A total of £23,471.05, plus withholding tax of £6,689.77, has been paid to McMahon Sheedy to date.
