Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Craftwork Misplacement Report.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

61 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the assurance, if any, she will give to students sitting the leaving certificate examination that similar mistakes which happened with projects and papers in 1995 will not be repeated; and the safeguards, if any, that have been put in place to avoid such occurrences. [3782/96]

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

87 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Education if the error in relation to the leaving certificate art and craft examination was confined to a specific administrative area or if it was a widespread problem. [3716/96]

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

107 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Education when the Price Waterhouse report on the misplacement of craftwork in the leaving certificate art examination in 1995 will be published. [3708/96]

I intend to take Questions Nos. 61, 87 and 107 together.

As Minister I am concerned that the certificate examinations retain the full confidence of parents, teachers and the many institutions which rely on them. It is for this reason that I considered it essential that the operation of the 1995 leaving certificate art examination be the subject of a full independent inquiry. This inquiry is now being conducted by Price Waterhouse. I expect the report to be available to me within a matter of weeks and I will arrange for publication as soon as possible thereafter. The inquiry will address all aspects of the matter, including the location and scale of any errors which occurred.

I have also asked Price Waterhouse to review the entire appeals procedure in the case of all subjects. It is my firm intention that recommendations arising from the Price Waterhouse report will be implemented for the 1996 examinations.
