Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - INTERREG Programme Funding.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

96 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for the Environment the basis on which the funding from the INTERREG programme for the Laghey-Pettigo Road, County Donegal, was reduced: if he will increase funding for this road to £400,000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3977/96]

The selection of projects for funding under the INTERREG II programme was determined on the basis of their compliance with the EU eligibility criteria, the priority attaching to particular projects, the limited funding available and the needs of different areas. Donegal County Council submitted nine projects for funding under the programme at an estimated cost of £2.9 million in 1996. The council received grant allocations of £1.35 million for seven projects in 1996, including an allocation of £130,000 for the R232 Laghey-Pettigo road.

Road grants have been fully allocated in 1996 and there are no further funds available from which an additional allocation could be made to any county council this year. It is open to Donegal County Council in future years to apply for further assistance for the Laghey-Pettigo road under the INTERREG II programme which runs until 1999.
