Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Criminal Case Data.

Matt Brennan

Ceist:

17 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the number of murders, attempted murders, rape and aggravated sexual assault cases that are currently awaiting trial before the Central Criminal Court. [3813/96]

There are 47 rape cases, 19 murder cases, two attempted murder cases and two aggravated sexual assault cases currently awaiting trial before the Central Criminal Court. In addition, in one of the rape cases pending, there is a second count of aggravated sexual assault.

It is important to note that the listed cases here have not yet been proven in court. It should also be noted that delays in the hearing of cases at the Central Criminal Court can be for a number of reasons such as requests for adjournment, delays in the preparation of books of evidence and requests from legal representatives on behalf of their clients.
