Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

35 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases in which bail has been estreated from a surety by reason of the issue of a bench warrant by a judge of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court as a result of the non-attendance of an accused person before that court in 1995. [3815/96]

John Browne

Ceist:

67 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases in which an application to estreat bail has actually been commenced as a result of the issue of a bench warrant by a judge of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 1995. [3816/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23, 35 and 67 together.

There were 189 bench warrants issued by judges in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court as a result of the non-attendance of accused persons on bail in 1995. One application to estreat bail was made as a result of the issue of a bench warrant by a judge of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and this application was refused. Accordingly, there were no cases in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 1995 in which bail was estreated.
