Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Prison Places.

Chris Flood

Ceist:

53 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Justice if unfortunate developments in relation to the peace process have in any way altered her recently announced plans to provide extra prison spaces. [3827/96]

Desmond J. O'Malley

Ceist:

59 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Justice the changes, if any, there will be to the package of measures governing prison places announced by her on 30 January 1996 in view of the breach of the IRA ceasefire; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3908/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 53 and 59 together.

I am proceeding to implement the plans for the provision of additional prison places as announced by me on 30 January this year. The first 30 additional places will come on stream later this week and building works in relation to some other elements of the plan will be commenced shortly.

The implications of recent events in the peace process for these prison plans are being kept under close review in my Department. It is too soon to say what the implications, if any, might be.
