Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teachers.

Noel Davern

Ceist:

141 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Education if Presentation secondary school, Clonmel, County Tipperary is being considered for an ex-quota remedial teacher in view of the large number of disadvantaged pupils enrolled at that school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4181/96]

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

165 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that Benada Abbey secondary school, County Sligo, qualifies for priority consideration under the criteria laid down by her Department for allocation of a remedial teacher and in view of the long standing application of the school for such a post she will have arrangements made to meet this need in the next appointments of remedial teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4446/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 141 and 165 together.

I approved the allocation of an additional 73 ex-quota remedial posts to second level schools this year. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need and having regard to the existing teaching provision in schools. Given this fact and the limited number of posts available, I was not in a position to allocate a remedial post to the schools in question this year. The position of the schools will be considered again when next it is possible to allocate additional remedial posts.
