Ceist:194 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice the total number of serving gardaí per rank, on 1 January for each of the years from 1980 to 1996. [4368/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to his Parliamentary Question No. 95 of 1 March 1995 which provides the details requested by the Deputy in respect of the years 1986 to 1995. The following tables provide the information sought for the years 1980 to 1985 and on 31 December 1995. I should point out that prior to 1989 Garda recruits were included in the overall strength figures. Since April 1989, with the introduction of the two year training programme for recruits, only those members who have been attested to the force, that is, completed Phase 3 of training, are included in the overall strength of the force. At 31 December 1995 there was a total of 455 student gardaí in phases 1, 2 and 3 of training.
