Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Rehabilitation Support Services.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Ceist:

101 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health the way in which he proposes to further develop drug rehabilitation support services; whether these will be confined to certain areas of the country; if so, which areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4496/96]

Limerick East): In general, rehabilitation services are provided in tandem with treatment for heroin misusers. The greatest demand for such services is currently in the Dublin area. The Eastern Health Board already provides rehabilitation for a number of drug misusers at its “Soilse” and “Saol” projects. Drug misusers attending these projects are taught a range of social and occupational skills to prepare them for employment.

Arising from the decisions made by the Government on 20 February 1996, the board will be seeking to extend these facilities to provide services for more drug misusers. In addition, support will be provided to voluntary groups to allow them to develop rehabilitation initiatives.
