Vol. 462 No. 4

Written Answers. - Counselling Services.

John Ellis

Ceist:

61 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce a scheme of counselling for abused victims of sexual assaults other than that currently operated by the health boards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4742/96]

Limerick East): I should like to advise the Deputy that, in addition to the support and counselling services provided by health agencies to victims of sexual assault, generous financial assistance is provided to Rape Crisis Centres nationwide who provide a valuable complementary service. In the current year this will amount to approximately £907,000. I am satisfied that this combined statutory/voluntary approach represents an effective response to the service requirements in this area.
