Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Youghal (Cork) Coastal Protection.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

256 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Marine if funding will be made available for the provision of a new promenade and new breakers along Front Strand, Youghal, County Cork, to remedy the erosion that has damaged this area in recent times; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5055/96]

As I have previously indicated to this House, Cork County Council has advised the Department of the Marine of their top four priority proposals for coastal protection. These proposals include works at Youghal to protect the sea wall and the front strand which they have costed at £900,000. However, a detailed submission outlining fully costed, designed and justified proposals for all four and their relative priority is awaited. When this is received full consideration will be given to the inclusion of the proposals under the European Union funded Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-1999. Under this programme some £5.1 million is available for all coastal protection works over the 1994 through 1999 period.
