Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sub-Post Office Closures.

James McDaid

Ceist:

65 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of sub-post offices targeted for closure under the viability plan; and the number of post offices that have been closed in Donegal and its three postal districts since the scrapping of the viability plan. [4642/96]

The An Post viability plan, published in February 1991, proposed the closure of 550 sub-post offices. This element of the plan was withdrawn in April 1991 pending a review by independent consultants appointed by the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications.

At the time that the sub-office closure element of the plan was withdrawn there were 126 sub-offices in County Donegal. Since that date 23 offices have been reviewed on the retirement or resignation of the incumbent postmaster, and of these six have been closed.
