Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Service Staff Embargo.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

80 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the current embargo in the public service in causing great hardship to those attempting to return after career breaks in view of the fact that when they are refused reemployment, they are not eligible for social welfare benefits or allowances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4906/96]

I am not aware of staff, whose career breaks have expired, being delayed beyond the agreed period in returning to duty as a result of the current control on staffing in the Civil Service. If the Deputy would like to supply details, I will be happy to follow up the matter.

The eligibility or otherwise of people for social welfare benefits or allowances is a matter for my colleague the Minister for Social Welfare in the first instance.
