Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - OPW Staff Shortage.

Matt Brennan

Ceist:

82 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance when further staff will be employed in the Office of Public Works in Sligo in order to cope with the backlog of applications from schools in five counties who have applied for extensions, building work and others such as St. Joseph's national school, Killenumery, Dromahair, County Leitrim, who are waiting for drawings to be done for the provision of indoor toilets at the school. [5009/96]

It is proposed to augment the staff in the Sligo office by re-deployment of an officer from another area whose workload has recently diminished. Current proposals by the Department of Education to change the method of funding improvements to national schools are expected to have the effect of reducing the input required from the Office of Public Works in relation to such works. In the light of this, any further increase in staff resources above what is now proposed, would not be warranted.

As regards St. Joseph's national school, Killenumery, contract documents will be completed by the end of March with a view to having the works completed by the end of the summer.
