Written Answers. - EU Health Action Programmes.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

113 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health the amount of money allocated from the EU for the five year action programmes on cancer, AIDS and health promotion; the way in which this money will be distributed; the programmes, if any, he plans to put in place over this five year period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5099/96]

Limerick East): Community five-year action programmes in the fields of cancer, AIDS and health promotion for the period 1996 to 2000 were definitively adopted last month. Total appropriations for the three programmes have been agreed as follows: cancer, 64 million ECUs; AIDS and certain other communicable diseases, 49.6 million ECUs. health promotion, 35 million ECUs.

It is the responsibility of the Commission to ensure the implementation, in close co-operation with the member states and relevant organisations, of the range of actions provided for under each of the programmes. To assist the Commission in this role, a committee consisting of two representatives of each member state and chaired by a representative of the Commission, is established under each programme.

The committees are expected to have their first meetings during March, following which operational arrangements for the programmes will be put in place.
