Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - EU Widescreen Proposals.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

70 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, he has to introduce widescreen television in the context of any EU proposals. [5298/96]

The introduction of widescreen TV is a matter for broadcasters in the first place.

For the information of the Deputy, Council decision 93/424/EEC establishing an action plan for the introduction of advanced television services, including widescreen services in Europe, was adopted by the Council of Ministers on 22 July 1993.
Both broadcasters in their capacity as programme makers and independent producers may apply for funding under the action plan for the production and conversion of programmes to widescreen. Funding granted by the Commission under the action plan covers part of the additional cost incurred by programme makers for the production of programmes in the widescreen format or their conversion into that format.
The Commission is responsible for selecting projects for community funding.
