Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Taiwan Elections Observers.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

57 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the attendance of observers to monitor the forthcoming elections in Taiwan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5034/96]

When Ireland established diplomatic relations with The People's Republic of China in 1979, the Government recognised the Government of The People's Republic of China as the sole Government of China. Arising out of this one-China policy, Ireland does not have diplomatic or official relations with Taiwan. Economic, trade and cultural relations between Ireland and Taiwan are pursued within the private rather than the public sector. In these circumstances, attendance by official observers from Ireland to monitor the election which is to be held on 23 March 1996 in Taiwan would not be in accordance with Government policy.
