Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medieval Ditch Preservation.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

76 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the action, if any, he intends to take to preserve the medieval ditch at Kiltalown House in Tallaght, Dublin 24 which is believed to be part of the Pale, dating back to the early 16 century; if he will request that South Dublin County Council and the National Roads Authority to review the routing of the proposed Tallaght by-pass in order that the ditch may be preserved; his views on whether the nearby Bronze Age Stone should be preserved in situ or moved to a place of safety; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5338/96]

As part of the normal consultation process for road improvement schemes of this nature, the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service will be liaising with the relevant road authority for the proposed Tallaght by-pass. Since detailed planning and design of the project, which are matters for South Dublin County Council and the National Roads Authority, has not yet started, it is too early at this stage to assess the impact of this development, if any, on archaeological sites in the vicinity.

The sites referred to by the Deputy have been entered on the sites and monuments record and it is my intention that they be included in the record of monuments and places.
