Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tourettes' Syndrome.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

149 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education the measures, if any, that have been put in place to improve facilities for young people suffering from tourettes' syndrome by way of providing the necessary education places and assistance to help families cope with children suffering from this syndrome. [5769/96]

My Department is aware of only two children at primary level who have been diagnosed as suffering from tourettes' syndrome.

In one case the child is not attending school at present and my Department has sanctioned home tuition in order to meet his educational needs. Efforts are being made to have the child enrolled in a primary school. My Department is confident that these efforts will come to fruition shortly.

In the other case, the child is attending his local national school. My Department is examining ways of providing support services to the school in order to meet his needs.
