Ahern asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the number of persons employed in the constituency office and the private office by him and the Minister(s) of State at his Department; the rank of each person; their salaries; the functions of the constituency office and the private office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ahern asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the name and status of the non-established staff, including programme managers and advisers employed in a temporary, part-time or permanent capacity who have been supplied with mobile telephones and fax machines for their home residences since the commencement of this Government; the estimated cost in each individual case; the total estimated cost to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ahern asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if he or the Minister(s) of State at his Department have directed any of the staff employed in the departmental constituency office to work directly in the local constituency clinic; if so, if this practice is in the public interest; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 154, 155 and 157 together.

Two staff, a personal assistant and a clerical assistant (typist), are employed in the constituency office of my Department which deals with matters relating exclusively to my constituency. Their current annual salaries are £18,955 and £10,094 respectively. Neither person has ever been directed by me, as Minister for Equality and Law Reform, to work in my local constituency clinic.

A total of 11 staff are employed in my general ministerial office, which handles administrative matters associated with the discharge of my functions as Minister for Equality and Law Reform. The rank and current annual salary of these staff are as follows:

None of the established or non-established staff of my Department have been supplied with fax machines for use at their home residences. Two members of staff, Ms Anne Kinsella, programme manager and Mr. Richard Humphreys, special adviser, have been supplied with mobile telephones at an approximate cost to date of £2,100 and £1,000, respectively. Total cost of the Department, therefore, is £3,100 approximately
There is no Minister of State in my Department.
