Vol. 463 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental State Cars.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

300 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice in respect of her Department and each semi-State body and Government-constituted board under the aegis of her Department but with the exception of members of the Government, the persons who are provided with cars at State expense; the offices held by such persons; the number of people employed to drive such cars; the type of use permitted for such cars; and the total cost in each case. [6481/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 189 and 190 of 5 March 1996 which outlines the allocation of cars in the State fleet. My reply also provides details in relation to the costs of the State fleet in 1995.

The only official under the aegis of the Department of Justice who has the permanent use of a State car is the Garda Commissioner who is provided with a car and a Garda driver in connection with the discharge of his responsibilities. Other senior personnel in the Garda Síochána may use, for official duties, cars in the Garda fleet when available.
